“Eugenic Madness: Asylums and the Data of Heredity”<\/p>\n

The science of human genetics grew up against a background of eugenics.\u00a0 This eugenics is usually attributed to the evolutionary thinking of Darwin\u2019s cousin Francis Galton, and its role in relation to society, schooling, and medicine as an application of Galton\u2019s idea.\u00a0 I will show how the study of human heredity, including eugenic uses, took shape a quarter century before Galton, as part of an effort at insane asylums to gather data on the causes of insanity and to slow down or reverse the relentless growth of these institutions.<\/p>\n
